Tips, dressings and utensils for cooking fun salads
Down to the wire on those extra pounds? Tips to make your healthy eating resolution easier
Summer tends to leave, along with the photos of the beach, another kind of memories: those extra kilos that accompany the excesses at the beach bar. So if your back-to-school resolution is to get on a plan and start eating healthier… congratulations, because our chef Carlos Caballero is going to make it a little easier for you. Avoid boring salads with only oil and vinegar and take note of these simple tips and tricks.
Yogurt is a perfect ally for salad dressing / Y.
Dressings
- The traditional vinaigrette has three quarters oil, one quarter vinegar and salt. Change the salt for soy, the sesame or coconut oil and the vinegar for lime juice, lemon juice or mustard.
- Add aromatic herbs such as spices, some sweet element such as honey or orange juice (but in this case, I raise the salt point a little).
- Say NO to vinaigrettes with 18 ingredients… As in fashion, less is more. Of course, if the salad is not a side dish, but the main course, then, complicate your life a little and try new things like introducing vegetables and nuts in moderation.
- Hearty salads (endive, raw cabbage, etc.) look great with creamy dressings made, for example, with yogurt and lemon juice, white pepper, chopped mint and olive oil.
- If yogurt does not convince you when it comes to dressing, try mashed avocado seasoned with oil, paprika, salt and lemon.
- Tomato can also be a great ally as a dressing. Chop it into very small pieces and macerate it with thyme, chives, chilli, crushed garlic, oil, salt and nuts.
- Do you love garlic but find it indigestible? Rub it on the plate where you are going to serve the salad, so you will have flavor without having to eat it.
Try mixing all kinds of greens, fruits, seeds and vegetables in your salad. / Y.
Tricks
- Buy from Yelow a lettuce spinner. It is a super cheap but very practical kitchen utensil for washing and moving salads.
- Use whatever you have in the fridge to add to your salads: roasted peppers, mushrooms, wild asparagus, broccoli, legumes, cooked pasta, quinoa, brown rice, etc.
- Seeds such as chia or sesame will give your salad an exceptional texture and flavor.
- Fruit is also a great ally for salads. Try orange or mango segments.
